"Put The Kettle On" is a new and exciting chat series where Shepherd's Style Director, Samantha Poole, solves fashions greatest mysteries.
From Vision To "Reali-Tea"
"It is just as I had envisioned it: an intimate gathering of women, enjoying a cup of tea and a biscuit in Shepherd's new 'fashion living room', as I informally chat about current trends, dressing different body shapes, and giving wardrobes a much needed breath of fresh air," beams Sam. "It's all very relaxed and our goal is a level of comfort among our guests, who are encouraged to give feedback, ask questions, and touch and feel the garments being shown."
Every "Kettle" session covers a different topic: in the past month, Sam has demystified the white blouse, the poncho, the top colours for Fall and casual dressing (a nightmare for many women). Shares Sam, "Casual dressing is a subject that was suggested by one of the attendees at the previous week's chat. I was pleased to delve into casualwear, as it is something I personally struggle with. My 'style personality' is classic and I am a 5'2" rounded hourglass, so dressing casually is something I dread. For many, dressing for the weekend or a day off means skinny jeans, activewear, or oversized clothing; all styles that do nothing for most body shapes. My dream is for casualwear to be put-together, look sharp and have presence."
A Budget-wise Fashionista's Cup Of Tea
Winter white is a dazzling hue on the catwalk this season. When worn head-to-toe, winter white can look expensive but can be quite budget-friendly; the Echo poncho on the far left is only $78! Wear a light-coloured jean throughout the cold season, with its necessary companion, an equally as light top, such as this A-line tunic from Indigenous. This piece works overtime as a base that can layered with different length toppers, from capes to the cropped Moto-jacket. Of course, we can assume that, to most, casual should mean easy-to-care for, so all of the pieces below are machine washable.

This luxurious winter white outfit is made of the acid wash, hi-rise Yoga Jeans ($143), a V-neck, cotton A-line tunic from Indigenous ($240), and a vegan leather Moto-jacket from Sandwich ($210).[/caption]
Grey is Steeped in Style
Black will also hold a place in our hearts as it is forever-sophisticated and very slimming; however, black is not always known for being casual. This season, "grey is the new black" in a palette that ranges from cool to warm and from soft pearl to rich charcoal. Consider grey as your new basic this year, as it is a neutral that plays well with other colours, encouraging them to really pop! Plus, grey is anything but drab in the right texture, especially in knitwear.

At the root of it all (from L to R): Elaine is wearing a straight cut Yoga Jean in smoke ($135), an A-line tunic in ash grey from Indigenous ($240) and a reversible cardigan from Orange ($174); and Primal is wearing a long, lean boyfriend cardigan from Sandwich ($185).[/caption]
Attired To One's Taste
The key to a great casual wardrobe is having fun! Touches of bright colours and bolder prints do wonders to supplement zest and add some zing to your casual look. Take the time to find pieces that you love, that can be worn for many seasons, and that have personality. Among this Fall's stunners are separates from Sandwich, who has masterfully combined leather and ponte to allow for an edgy, yet easy-to-move-in look (see Primal, far left).
From L to R: mixed-media leather/ ponte jacket and pants from Sandwich ($350 & $270), ombre poncho from Indigenous ($320) and Novelti coat from Sandwich ($425).
When are we Putting On The Kettle?
"Put on the Kettle" is a half-hour, info-packed session that we present on a weekday, usually at 11am or 1pm at Shepherd's Train Yards. We are still figuring out which days and times are optimal, so we do not have a set schedule. Upcoming sessions are posted a day or two prior on Facebook and Instagram, and our VIP customers receive an e-mail notification. To preserve the intimacy of the chats, we like to limit our groups to 10 - 15 guests, so when you receive the notice, RSVP as soon as you can. We look forward to having you attend an upcoming fashion chat.
