Sale season gets a fashionista's heart racing as she searches for the perfect fashion find. We all know that discount racks can contain essentials to help build and replenish our wardrobe AND trending styles, colours, and prints that we might not have considered at full price. However, on the other side of things, we have all arrived home with items that may not have been the best choice. So, before navigating the sale section, here are some tips to ensure you leave with only the right items for you!
1.Start your search with the right mindset
Are you like Indiana Jones, ready to move mountains and find that buried treasure, as you approach the sale area? Before you get too close to the Golden Idol, remember this mantra, "It is better to leave the store without a purchase, than to leave with the the wrong purchase."
2.Shop the sale rack as you would regular priced merchandise
It's the item, not the price tag, that should grab your attention. Before looking at the price tag, you should enjoy how the garment makes you look and feel. If it ends up being a great deal, then that's a bonus!
3. Don't spend to save
Don't calculate the savings you get when buying an item on sale. Unless it's something you really need or want, buying something because it's on sale is just not economical - you're still spending!
4. Quality over quantity
The best buys are the quality items. Take a close look at the fabric, lining, seaming, buttons, and closures. Is everything in tip-top shape? Will the garment look good after a number of wears or will it break down after a couple of washes?
5. Does it fit - your body, your lifestyle, your wardrobe?
It should be obvious but a piece of clothing is not a bargain if it doesn't fit well. Do yourself a favor and take the time to try it on. Look at yourself from all angles (front, side AND back). Does the piece enhance your silhouette or will it fit better when "I lose 5lbs"? If the piece is too loose or too snug, will alterations help and are you prepared to cover this additional cost?
On a scale of 1 to 10, how comfortable does the garment feel? If it rates lower than an 8, chances are it will be relegated to the back of your closet with the tags on.
A garment that will mix-and-match with at least three of your existing pieces shows promise. If not, will you be forever trying to find pieces to match it?
Does the item require special cleaning (i.e. dry cleaning) or is it machine washable? Can it be tossed in the dryer? Does it require ironing or steaming or is it wrinkle-free?
There is a lot to consider when deciding whether or not to add a simple piece to your wardrobe BUT if you build it right, you will always be in style (and it will take little to no effort to get dressed in the morning!). Happy Hunting!
