Ottawa-renowned beautician Leslie Ann Barrett joins us for Shepherds’ “Coffee Talk” to give us her top tips for a fresh face. Born in Halifax, Leslie Ann - also known as L.A. - has kept busy beautifying major clients including CTV News, Barney’s New York and ABC Morning Show throughout her career. It is no surprise that Shepherd's’ was so excited to sit down with L.A. to get her take on the latest makeup tips and tricks. From brows to lips and everything in between, L.A lets us in on the little secrets to keep your makeup sparkling and sizzling at every age.
A game changer if you want your makeup to last all day. Apply before any foundation or BB cream, as it works to both add a smooth, matte finish to oily skin and gives drier skin that perfect glow. No makeup? No problem - apply on its own to let your skin breathe. L.A.’s picks: La Biosthetique Paris or The Loft’s very own brand (images)
Ditch the multi-step highlight, contour scenario and work with your very own blush. Apply to a smiling face at the apples of your cheeks. L.A.’s pick: Turn your lip colour into a cream blush for a dewy look on drier skin tones.
Line the upper eyelids just below the lash. In doing so, you’ll make your lashes appear thicker and pop your eyes with less makeup - a refreshing day look. L.A.’s picks: Waterproof, pencil-form liner in black or dark blue.
Take your day look into the night by adding a smidge of shimmer shadow! Dab a fingertip size to your eyelids, right above your iris, to prime those peepers for a sparkling night out.
Thin Lips Fix
No need to “Trout Pout” your face to a fuller lip look. Instead, follow this makeup hack:
Apply your normal concealer around the lip line.
Add a slightly darker lip liner to your whole lip with a thin, lining brush. Make sure to get the corners of your mouth and the lower lip close to your teeth.
Add a matte lipstick to fill in the lips entirely.
Grab a tissue, separate into a single ply, put it straight onto the lips and apply a powder brush right through the tissue to blot the lips.
Finish things off by adding a shimmer gloss to cupid’s bow and the middle of the bottom lip. Spray your face with a setting spray to get a ready for anything look that lasts.
Brows & Lashes
Get the Block Brows: Block brows has been around for a while, commonly known as a styled brow with a very full arch. The brow looks great on a number of face shapes and anyone who’s into a more dramatic look.
Dealing with Sparse Brows: Sparse brows are often brows with hairs more spaced out in between them. As we age, many women will find their brows grow more sparse, making them gravitate to products to fill in those pesky gaps. There are a plethora of products to help women achieve a fuller brow without getting “angry bird” brows.
For Fair Skin: Try applying a taupe pencil to your brows, one which mimics your hair undertone best. If you have a cooler shade of blonde/brownde, choose a grey-blonde color. If you have warmer tones, a gold beige, taupe pencil will do the trick. For the daring woman, try a fiber product with a little brush. If you don’t have any brows, apply a waterproof liquid with a brush to bring the brow back.
