Where does my jacket, or coat, vest or raincoat fit in? Are they extras or included in the 16?
I travel internationally with a 21 or 22" suitcase so I only carry very light clothing. I use a food scale to weigh my clothing, and a suitcase scale to determine its weight, and I only allow 22 lb for summer travel and 25 lb for colder weather, to accommodate things that are a bit bulkier like sweaters.
Another tip: In the interior of all roller bags is a zippered lining (sometimes on both sides). Unzip that and on the bottom side, are the ridges that hide the handle. Between the ridges are spaces that can be used to lay flat items such as scarves, tights, a slip if you take one—even a t-shirt. Layer things in there to make a flat surface and then zip up the lining. Alternatively, if you are taking anything you don’t want visible, it can be placed there.
Think of your shoes as little packing cubes—I put chargers, cords, little jewelry pouches, pill bottles—and even sometimes socks, though I usually have those in a packing cube with undies.
If you take a hat, place it with the opening facing up, and fill it with a rolled piece or two of soft clothing that will keep the shape of the hat – a t-shirt or scarves or a nightgown work well. Then, in area under the brim, you can place sneakers or rolled shirts so the brim doesn’t get crushed.
And lastly—packing cubes. Ladies, I learned the hard way. My suitcase came down the carousel wide open with all my clothes and underwear flopping out. Cubes contain that—and also make it more private if TSA decides to rummage through your belongings.

This helps a lot. Is it possible that you could actually show examples of each 4 × 4? Like, could you pick two tops and two bottoms in black for example and post that. Then show four neutrals that would go with that, and so on. it’s a lot to ask, but it would really help.
I leave on an 18 day cruise in October to Italy and Croatia and Montenegro. I am only going to pack your way. I know I can do it. I only use a carry-on. Last winter I traveled for two months in a carry-on. I am so excited to be wearing such elegant clothing this October- All from Shepherds,
